Cloudera, Dell and Intel are collaborating on the creation of dedicated Dell In-Memory Appliances for the Cloudera Enterprise. The appliances will help integrate the hardware and software, with a view to boosting real-time analytics performance. The In-Memory Appliances will be the first in a group of collaborative developments, which will be known collectively as “Dell Engineered Systems for Cloudera Enterprise.”

“Traditional systems isolate data and create silos that make exploration and collaboration hard,” stated Mike Olson, Cloudera’s co-founder and chief strategy officer. “By putting that data into a modern enterprise data hub, customers can combine it and analyze it.” Dell CTO Sam Greenblatt also highlighted the collaboration will allow users to “incorporate real-time data streams into their applications”.

The appliances will run on Dell R920 hardware that is based on Intel’s Xeon processor, with Cloudera’s enterprise offering, which also incorporates Apache Spark. It is estimated that new appliances integrating these hardware and software solutions could run as much as 100 times faster than MapReduce in-memory, and up to 10 times faster on disk.

Together, Intel, Dell and Cloudera are attempting to build a fully-integrated “big data ecosystem”, from the hardware to the analytics and everything in between.

According to the latest research from Dell, big data projects have made a significant shift from their enterprise roots to midmarket companies across the globe. The report, focused exclusively on midmarket companies, found that 41 percent of respondents have one or more big data projects underway, with another 55 percent planning to start one in the “foreseeable future”. Moreover, the report also suggests that big data projects have become a critical decision-making factor for midmarket companies

Some key finding of the report are:

  • 80 percent of survey respondents agree that they need to better analyze their rapidly expanding data collections. Among their top goals: Improve product quality, seize business opportunities and speed decision-making.
  • 89 percent of respondents with a big data initiative in progress report significant improvements in company decision-making.
  • Encouraged by early success, respondents expect big data budgets to rise from between $2 million and $5 million up to an average of $6 million in the next two years as companies invest more in hardware, software and training.
  • The most valuable technologies for midmarket companies running big data initiatives are real-time data processing, predictive analytics and data visualization tools.
  • 50 percent of organizations with a big data initiative in flight are satisfied with the quality and speed of their decision making, compared to just 23 percent among those yet to kick off a big data project.
  • 49 percent of organizations with a big data project in progress are satisfied with their ability to improve product quality, compared to just 32 percent of those organizations still in the planning phase.

Although the report shows promising signs of how big data can help midmarket companies, it also suggests that there is room for growth. For example, managing data complexity is still considered to be a big obstacle for companies, with 40 percent of executives suggesting that the variety of new data types and structures poses a significant challenge. Additionally, the report shows that a large portion of the companies surveyed have not incorporated social media and other big data sources into their analytics.

Malaysia is entering into the competition to be the next hub for big data, up against neighbouring countries like Singapore and South Korea.   The Philippines are training 200,000 students, while India is teaching a massive 500,000 students to use R, a big data statistical platform.  Where Singapore has invested S$180 mil into training a slew of new big data scientists and has even appointed the first ever government chief data officer, Malaysia lags behind.  But Pulsate aims to change that with setting up a big data facility to train 3,000 specialists, taking candidates from among those with tertiary education in mathematics and economics.

“Pulse group chief executive officer Bob Chua says the big data centre and data academy are on track for completion by year-end in collaboration with global partners like DellIntel and Revolution Analytics.”  With the global demand for data scientists expected to rise dramatically from 2,500 at present to over 200,000 by 2017 Malaysia is stocking up and gunning for a starting position in the race.

Not only is big data being compared to striking oil, but some see it as a winner-take all game, where to be late is to miss out on an opportunity completely.  Taking into consideration all the fringe benefits that come with creating a new data center, including but not limited to direct foreign investment, increased high-level job creation, and paving the way for an new generation of well-educated individuals, Malaysia may have well chosen a long-term plan with enviable results.
