Research and Markets recently published their report on the Global HDaaS (Hadoop-as-a-Service) Market 2015-2019. They market, they believe will continue to grow at a CAGR of 84.81 percent over the period 2015-2019.

Although many have been quick to claim the death of “big data” and the demise of Hadoop, adoption continues to rise. M&R analysts attribute this dissonance to one key factor- although the big players may be moving on, SMEs are flocking to data services and HDaaS in their droves.

“One key trend emerging in this market is the increased adoption of HDaaS by small and medium enterprises. The market has witnessed that SMEs are among the earliest adopters of cloud computing and big data technology. Because this end-user segment is already aware of the potential benefits of cloud computing, HDaaS vendors are looking to capitalize on the increase in demand for HDaaS solutions from this segment,” notes an analyst from the research team.

To calculate the market size, the report considers revenue generated from Hadoop analytics solutions, Hadoop software, applications, services, support, and maintenance.

Some of the key findings of the report point out:

  1. The key vendors in the Global HDaaS Market are Amazon Web Services, EMC², IBM and Microsoft.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Altiscale, Cask Data, Cloudera, Google, Hortonworks, HP, Infochimps, Karmasphere, MapR Technologies, Mortar Data, Pentaho and Teradata.

  2. Cost-effective solutions for big data management find growing demand and drive the market. Cost-effective cloud computing technology, with capabilities to manage and analyze large amounts of data, through Hadoop, enables enterprises to manage their big data of any size in a cost-effective manner, the report states.
  3. On the other hand, “lack of awareness about or unfamiliarity with the Hadoop technology,” is a drawback affecting the market.

“The lack of awareness about the Hadoop technology and the lack of trained professionals are two of the major issues that have prevented enterprises from investing in Hadoop-based big data solutions, which is hindering the growth of the market.”

The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors. The detailed report is available here.

IT companies and business heavyweights are joining forces in a shared industry effort focused on promoting and advancing the state of Apache Hadoop and Big Data technologies for the enterprise.

Introducing the Open Data Platform Initiative (ODP) which will in essence, help enterprises enhance business value globally with Hadoop. Founding outfits Pivotal and Hortonworks are participating with GE Software, IBM, Infosys, SAS, AltiScale, Capgemini, CenturyLink, EMC, Splunk, Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Teradata, and VMware in this effort.

Gavin Sherry, VP of Engineering, Data, at Pivotal writes: “Our goal is to create a standardized core platform of compatible versions of Apache Software Foundation projects that provide a stable base against which Big Data solutions providers can qualify solutions. This will facilitate compatibility and ease interoperability across the Big Data ecosystem while enabling a new level of choice for enterprises.”

In line with ASF guidelines the effort will enable collaboration between vendors and end users of Big Data technology.

Going by the annual TechTarget/Computer Weekly IT Spending Priorities survey for 2015, globally about 30% respondents said they were undertaking big data initiatives this year as compared to 2014’s 17%. In Europe the fraction was 26%, and for the UK 21%, Computer Weekly pointed out.

Navin Budhiraja,  head of architecture and technology, Infosys, speaking for services noted that the ODP’s ecosystem would preserve “the rapid innovation cycles of open source software, while still providing the benefits of broad vendor support and interoperability.”

The announcement for the organisation came earlier last week through Pivotal’s blog post, where its nuances have been further detailed.

EMC has revealed the elimination of an undisclosed number of jobs to take charges worth $150 million on the restructuring.

The news came last Thursday as the company forecast 2015 profit trailed analysts’ estimates.

The giant “expects to end 2015 with more employees than at the beginning,” it told SDxCentral  in a statement. It was also said that the restructuring “will place priority on shifting impacted individuals to faster-growing areas of the business.”

As compared to the same quarter last year, EMC has reported that with a revenue of $7 billion, there has been an increase of 15 percent, at earnings of 69 cents per share.

Wall Street was expecting 68 cents per share on revenue of $7.1 billion, reports ZDNet.

In spite of the majority stakeholder, VMWare leverage that saw favourable earnings in the past week, profit rates have been brought down to $1.98 per share for 2015, on revenue of $26.1 billion where analysts had predicted $2.13 per share on revenue of $26.21 billion, according to Thompson Reuter, owing to precarious exchange rates.

Pivotal, the San Francisco-based software and services provider has announced its partnership with the AMPLab at UC Berkeley to support the in-memory Tachyon project. They aim to bolster the data lake technology with an architecture that builds upon disk-based storage with memory-centric processing frameworks.

Being led by Haoyuan Li, a PhD candidate at the UC Berkeley AMPLab, Tachyon is a memory-centric, fault-tolerant distributed file system that allows for reliable data exchange at in-memory speed across cluster frameworks, explains their Blog. Tachyon will be a central data exchange layer for the Pivotal Big Data Suite.

Till date this project is the fastest-growing project in all of AMPLab history, ahead of Mesos and Spark. It is currently a GitHub project developed under the Apache License.

EMC’s Chief Technology Officer John Roese said, ”EMC is excited to join with Pivotal in supporting and fostering the rapidly innovating Big Data ecosystem. The next wave of real-time analytics will be made possible by technologies such as Apache Spark and Tachyon, in combination with innovative storage products such as EMC’s recent DSSD acquisition.”

Pivotal which is a spin-out and joint venture of EMC Corporation and VMware has pledged resources to Tachyon’s development and stands as the number one corporate contributor to the Tachyon code base.

IBM announced on Wednesday the availability of its new big data service – IBM Navigator on Cloud – which is designed to help businesses interact and secure enterprise content on any device. The latest version of Navigator is build on Softlayer, and is part of IBM’s larger plan to move all of its big data and analytics tools to the cloud.

“With today’s news, IBM is fulfilling an unmet need in the marketplace by providing a new service that combines enterprise grade security, governance and integration with mobile and web apps that are easy to interact with and use,” said Doug Hunt, general manager of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) at IBM, in a statement. “This new offering surpasses the promises of our competitors, and offers clients a simple and easy experience to learn, try, and buy it.”

The new service allows content to be synchronised and made available on any browser, desktop and mobile devices, ultimately giving teams better access to data. As eWeek describe, “a maintenance worker in the field can use a mobile device to pull up the latest schematics for a piece of equipment, take photos of a damaged part, make updates to a safety document based on a repair and synchronize this content back to the cloud making it instantly available to colleagues on desktops or mobile devices.”

According to market research firm IDC, the global ECM market grew by 8.6 percent in 2013 to $5.1 billion. Additionally, the IDC also ranked IBM No. 1 in worldwide market share for content management; the report showed that IBM had a 15.9 percent share of the market, growing more than three times as fast as its nearest competitor.
