Adobe has issued emergency security updates for ColdFusion to fix a critical vulnerability, CVE-2024-53961, which could allow attackers to read arbitrary files. This weakness affects ColdFusion versions 2023 and 2021. The flaw, caused by a path traversal issue, potentially exposes sensitive data on vulnerable servers. While Adobe has not confirmed any exploitation in the wild, they rated the vulnerability as “Priority 1” due to the risk of active targeting.

Adobe issues emergency updates for ColdFusion vulnerability

According to Adobe’s advisory, organizations running ColdFusion are urged to install the latest updates—ColdFusion 2021 Update 18 and ColdFusion 2023 Update 12—within 72 hours. The company also emphasizes implementing the security configuration settings as outlined in the ColdFusion lockdown guides. The known proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit code raises further concerns, heightening the urgency for system administrators to act swiftly.

This isn’t the first time ColdFusion has faced significant security threats. In July 2023, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) directed federal agencies to secure their ColdFusion servers against two critical vulnerabilities, including CVE-2023-29298 and CVE-2023-38205, which had been exploited in attacks. CISA noted that vulnerabilities related to directory traversal have persisted in various forms since at least 2007, which underscores the ongoing challenge for software developers to address these critical security flaws.

CISA’s updated cyber plan could be key to stopping future hacks

X-Force Incident Command confirms the ongoing monitoring of this particular vulnerability. They recommend that organizations utilizing ColdFusion take immediate steps including patch application, implementing access controls, and enhancing authentication mechanisms. These measures can help mitigate the risk of unauthorized access and protect sensitive data from exploitation.

Despite the lack of confirmed cases of exploitation for CVE-2024-53961, the potential for data exposure remains a serious concern for organizations. The vulnerability’s ability to provide attackers with access to arbitrary files raises flags regarding the integrity of sensitive information, including system credentials that could further compromise other accounts.

With an increasing number of critical vulnerabilities being identified, organizations are encouraged to remain vigilant. Researchers have pointed out that the prevalence of path traversal vulnerabilities continues to pose significant risks across many systems. As noted by CISA, such vulnerabilities can lead to severe unauthorized access, so proactive remediation efforts are crucial.

Monitoring and logging systems effectively can help detect any unauthorized file access attempts, providing companies the opportunity to respond swiftly to any potential breaches. Organizations using ColdFusion are advised to review Adobe’s security bulletin closely and prioritize corrective measures to enhance their overall security posture.

Adobe shares fell 14% on December 12, 2024, after the company issued disappointing annual revenue guidance for 2025. Analysts had anticipated revenue of $23.8 billion, but Adobe’s forecast is approximately $23.4 billion, causing investor concern. CEO Shantanu Narayen discussed these results during a CNBC interview on the New York Stock Exchange.

Adobe shares drop 14% on disappointing revenue forecast

The revenue guidance reflects earnings estimates of $20.20 to $20.50 per share, falling short of the average adjusted profit forecast of $20.52 per share. This decline is Adobe’s steepest single-day drop since September 2022, with the stock now down 20% year-to-date, diverging from the Nasdaq’s 33% gain. Analysts at TD Cowen have downgraded Adobe to a hold rating, while Wells Fargo maintains a buy rating, highlighting a “frustrating” year for the software vendor.

Adobe’s fourth-quarter results, however, surpassed expectations, with adjusted earnings per share at $4.81 compared to analysts’ estimates of $4.66 and quarterly revenue rising 11% to $5.61 billion. This also exceeded the average revenue estimate of $5.54 billion. Despite surpassing quarterly estimates, the overall guidance indicated uncertainty surrounding future performance.

Adobe’s ongoing strategy to capitalize on generative AI is central to its growth, particularly through products like Firefly, an image generation tool. Analysts at Deutsche Bank upheld their buy rating but adjusted the target price from $650 to $600. They noted, “We see tangible evidence that Adobe is one of few application software companies in our coverage successfully monetizing generative AI today.”

Despite this, concerns linger among investors about potential competition from emerging AI-based startups. Notably, tools from companies like OpenAI and Runway AI are perceived as threats that could capture market share from Adobe. This sentiment has influenced stock performance, with recent analysts expressing skepticism over Adobe’s ability to sustain its market position amid rapid AI developments.

Analysts pointed out that while the company is integrating AI features across its platform, there is still apprehension regarding the pace at which AI adoption might affect overall business performance.

In the latest fiscal quarter, Adobe reported that digital media annual recurring revenue reached $17.3 billion, slightly surpassing forecasts. The company’s anticipated growth in digital media net new annual recurring revenue (ARR) should increase 11% over the next fiscal year.

While Adobe has made significant strides by embedding its proprietary AI model into applications, including video creation tools in Premiere, the broader market remains unpredictable. Analyst Anurag Rana told Bloomberg that the conservative guidance may be a reflection of the “uncertain pace at which AI usage may take root.”

Artificial intelligence is quickly changing how we interact with technology, and big tech companies are getting involved in shaping new rules to keep up. Companies like OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft are supporting a new California bill that would make it clear when content is created by AI. These companies believe it’s important for people to know when they see or hear something made by a computer, not a human. At the same time, Elon Musk is supporting another California bill that aims to keep AI safe by requiring safeguards on large AI models. So, what do these companies and individuals really want, and why? Let’s explore the latest moves in AI regulation and what they mean for the future.

What do OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft want?

According to Techcrunch, major tech companies like OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft are now backing a California bill that will require labels on AI-generated content. This bill, known as AB 3211, is scheduled for a final vote in August.

AB 3211 aims to make it clear when photos, videos, and audio clips are created by AI. It will require these AI-generated items to have watermarks in their metadata. While many AI companies already use watermarks, they are often hidden in the metadata, which most people don’t check. The new bill also requires big online platforms, such as Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), to show these labels in a way that is easy for everyone to see and understand.

OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft are part of a group called the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity. This group helped develop C2PA metadata, a widely used standard for labeling AI content. Even though a trade group representing these companies opposed AB 3211 in April, calling it “unworkable” and “overly burdensome,” recent changes to the bill seem to have won their support.

What does Elon Musk want?

In a different but related issue, Elon Musk has shown support for another California bill, SB 1047. This bill would require creators of very large AI models to set up safeguards to prevent their models from causing serious harm. Musk, who has a large AI company called xAI, believes the bill is necessary and has argued that it’s important for AI to be regulated just like other potentially risky technologies.

Despite Musk’s support, OpenAI has publicly opposed SB 1047 and is backing a different bill instead. These moves highlight the ongoing debate over how best to regulate AI technology and ensure its safe and ethical use. As California moves forward with these new rules, the tech industry will be watching closely to see how they will impact the future of AI.

People aren’t happy with the new Adobe Terms of Service update and for good reason, some even going so far as calling Adobe a spyware factory. The changes, which were quietly slipped into the ToS earlier this year, give Adobe broad rights to access, use, and even share user-created content for a variety of purposes, including training its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The Adobe Terms of Service update has led to a significant backlash from users who feel their privacy has been violated and their creative works are being exploited without their consent, similar to Windows 11’s Recall feature.

The unwelcome Adobe Terms of Service update

The heart of the controversy lies in the updated Adobe ToS clause that allows Adobe to use your work to train its machine learning models. The Adobe Terms of Service update states:

Our automated systems may analyze your Content and Creative Cloud Customer Fonts (defined in section 3.10 (Creative Cloud Customer Fonts) below) using techniques such as machine learning in order to improve our Services and Software and the user experience.

– Adobe Terms of Service update

While Adobe claims this is done to improve its products and services, many users are concerned that their creative works are being used to train Adobe’s AI models without their permission or compensation. This is particularly troubling for professional artists and designers who rely on Adobe’s software for their livelihoods and may not want their unique styles and techniques replicated by AI.

The backlash against Adobe’s updated ToS has been swift and widespread. Many users, like Wetterschneider on X, have taken to social media to express their outrage, with some even calling for a boycott of Adobe products. Several online petitions have been started demanding that Adobe reverse the changes, and some legal experts are exploring the possibility of class-action lawsuits.

Adobe’s history with user data is not the brightest

This is not the first time Adobe has faced criticism over its handling of user data. In 2013, the company suffered a massive data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of users. In 2019’s Adobe Terms of Service update, Adobe was accused of secretly collecting user data from its Creative Cloud apps, a claim the company denied. These incidents have eroded trust in Adobe and made many users wary of the company’s motives.

The current controversy over the Adobe Terms of Service update has only amplified these concerns. Many users feel that Adobe is prioritizing its own interests over those of its users, and that the company is not being transparent about how it uses user data. This lack of trust has led some users to seek out alternative software from companies with stronger privacy policies.

Adobe product alternatives worth checking out

While Adobe’s suite of products is widely used in the creative industry, there are many alternative apps available that offer similar functionalities, often at a lower cost or even for free.

Some of these alternatives may not offer all the same features as Adobe’s products, but they can still be powerful tools for creating high-quality content.

The growing trend of data harvesting

Adobe is not the only company facing scrutiny over its data practices. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of companies collecting and using user data in ways that many users find invasive and exploitative. This has led to a broader debate about the balance between technological innovation and individual privacy rights.

The controversy surrounding Adobe’s ToS update is a stark reminder that this debate is far from over. Tech giants need to prioritize transparency and respect for user privacy.

Failure to do so will only further erode trust and lead to more backlash from consumers.

Ever find yourself lost in the sea of online images, pondering whether they’re handcrafted by human designers or conjured up by AI wizardry? Well, fear not! Adobe’s Content Credentials are here to unveil the mystery. Serving as digital fingerprints, they disclose the secrets behind who made what and how.  Adobe’s Content Credentials are also good for designers! These credentials offer reassurance and transparency, ensuring proper attribution and recognition for their creative efforts.

So, can Adobe’s Content Credentials solve the biggest AI image generation problem? Let’s understand it better and then decide.

What are Adobe’s Content Credentials?

Adobe’s Content Credentials are like digital nametags for creators and their work. They’re small bits of information that creators attach to their content, such as images or videos, when they share them online. These credentials include details about who made the content, how it was created, and even if any special tools or technologies were used, like AI.

Discover how to use Adobe Content Credentials: digital fingerprints revealing who made what, how, and with what tools.
Adobe’s Content Credentials are like digital badges for your creations (Image credit)

Based on your settings, here are the parts you need the fill in:

  • Producer: This is the name associated with the Adobe account used to create the content. It tells viewers who made the content.
  • Produced with: This shows the specific application or device that was used to create the final image. It gives insight into the tools and technology behind the creation.
  • Edits and activity: This section details the editing and processing actions that were done to create the final image. It lets viewers know what changes were made along the way.
  • Assets: These are other pieces of content that were used to create the final image. It might include things like photos, graphics, or other media elements.
  • Signed by: This indicates the organization responsible for issuing the Content Credential and ensuring that the information is recorded accurately. It adds a layer of validation to the information provided in the Content Credential.

Developed as part of the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), Content Credentials aim to restore trust in digital content by preserving essential contextual details that may otherwise be lost during the sharing and dissemination process. By attaching Content Credentials to their creations, creators can provide audiences with insights into the origins and authenticity of their work, fostering credibility and transparency.

Now, why would creators want to use these Content Credentials? Well, imagine you’re an artist sharing your latest masterpiece online. By adding Content Credentials, you’re not just saying, “Hey, look at my artwork!” You’re also saying, “Hey, this is me, and here’s how I made this.” It’s a way to add a personal touch and build trust with your audience.

Discover how to use Adobe Content Credentials: digital fingerprints revealing who made what, how, and with what tools.
Adobe’s Content Credentials allow creators to embed important details about their work directly into their content (Image credit)

Plus, Content Credentials help prevent misunderstandings or confusion about who deserves credit for the work. They make it crystal clear who the creator is and how they want their work to be used. So, whether you’re a photographer, a graphic designer, or a videographer, using Content Credentials can help you showcase your talent and protect your creative rights.

Meet Adobe Firefly AI, “the world’s first ethical text-to-image generation tool,” according to Adobe. Adobe claims that it does not train its system on the work of artists throughout the internet, just on content that is licensed or out of copyright. So is this the only difference that separates it from other AI image generators? In the first generation of Firefly, emphasis is placed on image and text effects design.

While there are still some debates about artificial intelligence-generated images, people are still looking for the best AI art generators. Can Adobe Firefly AI be one of them? Let’s take a closer look.

Update: Discover the magic of Adobe Firefly Image 2 Model.

What is Adobe Firefly AI?

Adobe describes Firefly, among other things, as “a family of creative generative AI models” that includes the already released Text to image and Text effects tools and the forthcoming Recolor vectors addition. The browser-based toolset features an AI text effects generator and a text-to-image converter for now. It is intended to be embedded into Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop in the future.

Firefly, like DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion, can take a text prompt and generate an image from it. However, it is built to be more reliable than those two apps. Adobe claims that Firefly was designed to “offer new ways to ideate, create, and communicate while significantly improving creative workflows.”

Adobe’s vice president of Generative AI and Sensei, Alexandru Costin, once described the prompts most people use as “word soup,” and it would be wrong to say that Costin was completely wrong. You can improve your results using Steady Diffusion by including keywords like “4K,” “trending on Artstation,” “hyper-realistic,” “digital art,” and “ultra-detailed” in your prompt. So, how to use Adobe Firefly AI?

To give an example, instead of writing “Monkeys play football,” you could say, “Monkeys play football, cinematic lighting, close-up, directed by Tarantino.”  It’s a bit of a cheat, but it’s the most effective approach for generative AIs.

The power of AI prompt engineering

The folks over at Firefly are doing things a little differently. The resulting image’s general style is set by selecting options from menus and pushing buttons. Simply enter “batman on a scooter” and choose the appropriate features to create the desired effect. Costin said that the images do not regenerate every time a new style is chosen, so if you like the content of the image, you don’t have to worry that changing the style would create something completely different. Its primary focus is on enhancing the user experience.

Adobe Firefly AI will be able to generate text effects in addition to new visuals when given textual suggestions. Costin demonstrated this by depicting the word “Firefly” as “many fireflies in the night, bokeh effect.” It’s visually striking, and it demonstrates how generative AIs may be used to enhance other creative processes.

AI image generation is used in a wide range of applications, including gaming, film and video production, and virtual reality.

How can an AI tool be ethical?

The new prompting style is not the only advantage of Adobe Firefly AI. The world’s first ethical text-to-image generation tool offers Adobe a couple of advantages when it comes to avoiding intellectual property infringement. Also, Adobe has stated that it will not use customers’ documents that contain images stored in the company’s cloud for generative AI training. Compared to search engines that have been trained on data from throughout the Web, Adobe has greater rights and control over images in its Adobe Stock library.

Contributors to Stock will have the ability to share in the financial rewards of generative AI. Nevertheless, the business has not provided specifics on how this will operate.

Meanwhile, Adobe will automatically add credentials to Firefly-created content to verify that it was indeed created with the help of generative AI. It’s also working on a universal “Do Not Train” tag for use by creators who don’t want their work used to train generative AI systems.

Adobe Firefly AI features

Snowflake Computing, a cloud data warehousing startup that’s coming out of stealth mode with intentions to disrupt the data warehousing market, has secured $26 million in Series B funding from prominent venture capital firms Redpoint Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures and Wing Ventures, to do just that.

The total investment has now reached about $50 million since their seed and Series A funding. John Walecka, founding partner of Redpoint Ventures will join the SnowFlake board. Team expansion to accelerate product development and customer and partner ecosystems creation remain on the cards.

“There has been shockingly little innovation in data warehousing in a decade. That creates a huge and largely unaddressed market opportunity—to create a data warehouse designed for the data, analytics, and technology innovations of today and tomorrow,” explains Bob Muglia, former Microsoft executive and CEO of Snowflake.

“The venture capital we’ve attracted underscores that investors see the same opportunity, and demonstrates their confidence in the work done over the last two years by Snowflake’s world-class team. This funding will further accelerate our product innovation and support our go-to-market strategy and investments,” he added.

On Tuesday, the company also announced the Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse, a completely new data warehouse built from the ground up as a cloud service. With an innovative architecture uniquely able to bring together all users, all data and all workloads in a single SQL data warehouse, Snowflake’s patent-pending new architecture delivers the power of SQL data warehousing, the flexibility of big data platforms and the elasticity of the cloud—at a 90 percent lower cost than on-premises data warehouses, reports their news release.

Although its cloud based database uses AWS at its core, the startup intends to add more compatibility with Microsoft’s Azure and the Google Cloud, which Muglia said he expects to see growing more within the next two years, GigaOm reports.

Current customers of the San Mateo, California-based firm include Adobe, CondeNast and White Ops.
